Tammy and her husband had recently inherited a home they were preparing to sell.  The back wall of the recreation room had mold damage caused by a gutter and down spout that was not draining water away from the home.  They wanted to remove the mold and fix the problem before they put the home on the market.   Tammy found Home Environment Solutions through a google search and called to schedule a free estimate and evaluation.

Certified Mold Remediator, Mark, met the homeowners to evaluate and propose a resolution.  Tammy’s biggest concern was that the job would be done correctly. They wanted to feel good about selling a safe house to someone without any worry.  Mark proposed a remediation solution to fit their needs.

The mold removal team arrived with their box truck fully equipped with specialized equipment to tackle the job.  Dave and Dalton removed the carpet and other damaged areas while using HEPA air scrubbers and negative air machines so not to cross contaminate the remainder of the home during the cleanup project.  Once the remediation portion of the job was finished, the team cleaned the entire HVAC system including all of the ducts and the furnace itself.

Randy has lived in his large A-frame home for many years.  The home sits on a full crawl space that has caused many problems throughout the years.  In the winter the floors of the main level of his home were always ice cold and in the summer the home was damp and musty.  Randy had a spray foam company spray the underside of the floor which didn’t have much impact on the problems.  During a visit to the Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show, Randy found Home Environment Solutions and decided to have us reevaluate his crawlspace and comfort issues.   

Mark, who has over thirty years of experience as a general contractor and is a nationally certified mold remediation expert evaluated Randy’s home.  Mark asked Randy about everything he experienced in the home over the years and what he has tried to resolve his problems.  He said that he recently noticed cracks were developing above his interior doors and the main level floors were becoming a little bit bouncy.  Mark listened to all of his concerns and what he was hoping to accomplish and then begin his investigation in the crawl space.   

Bad news!  The crawl space was wet and some of the floor joists and main beam were rotting.   The spray foam that was installed was actually making things worse.  Not only was there comfort problems but structural problems were discovered.   The good news…Mark is trained on how to fix all of the problems with permanent solutions.   He came up with a detailed plan to correct everything and Randy excitedly agreed.

The restoration project was completed by three different Home Environment Solutions teams.  First, the mold removal team removed all of the spray foam and completely remediated the mold in the crawl space.  Once that was completed, the construction team came in to structurally reinforce the main supporting beams of the home and affected floor joists. Finally, the insulation team insulated and encapsulated the crawl space.  The walls were insulated with SilverGlo insulation board and CleanSpace encapsulation liner was installed throughout.  A SaniDry Sedona dehumidification was installed to insure the crawl space stays dry and safe for years to come preventing mold and rot.

The end result of the project was a home that no longer smelled musty in the summer, didn’t have a supporting structure that was rotting, the floors are much warmer in the winter and the utility costs are lower.  Randy the home owner was impressed from start to finish. “Great work!”

When the HES team arrived they began the work to make the home more comfortable and energy efficient.  The old insulation was removed so that the team could air seal the attic and install TiteShell recessed light fixture covers.  The attic was then covered with a thick layer of blown in cellulose insulation.    Gary's home is now going to stay more comfortable year round with lower heating and cooling bills.
